This Is Video #425, “Headlights Or Foglights Must Always Be Used In Fog.” While Dad Drives To Birmingham, Mum (Mom) And Kids Enjoy A Game Of Blind Man’s Buff In The Park. The Two Sequences Are Intercut And Result In A Rather Chilling Outcome.
This weekend I saw the William Eggleston show at the Whitney, “The Democratic Camera.” There were a couple of screenings associated with the exhibit, including rarely seen video footage that he shot in the early 1970’s. He customized his porta-pack (an early analog video format) with an infrared video tube and 16mm lenses. He shot scenes from his own life, fixing his camera on family and friends living on fringes of downtown Memphis. An edited version of this footage was shown under the title “Stranded in Canton.” In the above clip, Eggleston points his camera at his own children.
In in the 1960’s the German advertising executive Charles Wlip put together a series of commercials for Afri Cola, which was a sweet, highly caffeinated soda. Originally he wanted the experimental garage rock band The Monks to do the music, but he ended up composing it himself. I originally saw this at the PINAKOTHEK DER MODERNE in Munich.
